Freeloading the Venue

Somehow, I’m not really sure how, we got on the topic of listening to shows from outside when you either like the band but not enough to actually spring for a ticket, or just happen to live close enough to the venue that you can hear the music.

When I was a kid I lived in Columbia, Maryland, about three miles from the Merriweather Post Pavilion. Hearing concerts from my house didn’t happen often, but it did happen occasionally. More often I would go to the symphony woods and listen outside the fence. As a teen I had a buddy who worked there as a vendor and I regularly got in free. That was cool. If you can, find yourself a friend on the staff of a venue; it can be highly rewarding.

Anyway I couldn’t find a term for listening outside, so I coined one: Freeloading the venue. I might come up with something better.
